A portfolio of Jack's photography throughout the term, some of which have been improved upon.
Camera Obscura
This was a tricky technique to understand and to execute. I used a drinking glass to magnify the forest outside of my house onto a piece of paper.
Camera Controls and Principles of Design
The goal for me here is to have monochromatic objects be framed together to encourage a different view of common kitchen elements.
Portraiture
The first two images are of myself. I tried to capture Ana uthentic image of myself in both images. I am blessed to have something to smile about often, but it's not always form ear to ear. I also spend a lot of time at my desk doing school work around symbols of things I love like Lego sets. For my second set of images, I photographed my close buddy Bryson. He smiles wide very often and brings joy to the people around him. We also spend a lot of time playing video games together and chatting on the weekends, which I tried to capture. Some elements I tried to improve in my photos of Bryson include the lighting and the composition. For his close-up portrait, I had him lit up on his left side by the open window and on his right side by a warm-colored lamp. I think this created a cool contrast. Similarly, I use the lamp and the window to photograph him playing video games. This time, the warm and cool light combined to light him in an off-white glow on just his left side. This created some contrast that shows off his face well. For the close-up picture, I tried to use the lines of the wall and the window to add weight to the left side of the frame with his face more toward the right. I think it makes the image more visually interesting. For the gaming image, I tried to play with negative space in the upper right of the frame. I had Bryson be in the lower left corner, almost leaving room for the viewer to wonder what is going on in the space around his mind. What is he playing? Is it a source of fun or escape, or both?
Landscape and Place
This is another photo that I decided to improve upon. the landscape is from my parents' property and evokes a peaceful connection to nature. I mainly decided to improve upon the lighting which can be seen in the second image. I waited for the late afternoon hours when the sun would hit the close tree with a lot of golden light. This made for a warmer, more vibrant picture that I think captures the space in a beautiful way. Even with so many trees, the sun finds its way down to the grass and the wide tree's leaves. This is my favorite picture I took through the term even if some of my others are objectively better.
